Courier is an on-stream X-ray fluorescence analyzer.

on-stream = works without direct human influence

X-ray = based on X-rays

fluorescence = excitation of the characteristic X-rays of an element by more high-energy X-rays

analyzer = measuring instrument measuring quality or characteristics

The Courier analyzer provides information on the concentration process, in other words, how to separate valuable minerals. The analysis results are primarily used in the controlling the concentration plant, and the ultimate goal is to reduce costs. The Courier analyzer can be used to increase production, improve the process intake and the quality of the concentrate, and reduce costs by saving on chemical costs.

The Courier analyzer measures element concentrations (e.g. copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), nickel (Ni)) in the sludge stream. It takes about 30 seconds for the analyzer to measure one sludge. All desired concentrations can be measured in one measurement. Different sludges are measured sequentially. It takes about 8 minutes to measure 14 sludges. The results indicate the concentration of the element in solids. The Courier analyzer can be used to measure the so-called heavy elements such as copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), iron (Fe) and nickel (Ni), totalling about three quarters of all elements. The results indicate the concentration of the element in solids. If desired, the results can be obtained in three different formats: for plotters, numerical printers, and process computers.

The Courier analyzer was manufactured by Outokumpu Oy’s technical export unit in Olari, Espoo.

3D model: In 1969, samples began to be analyzed directly during the process using a Courier analyzer. The analyzers were Outokumpu Oy’s own products, which were used to achieve rapid adjustment of concentration operations. The first Courier analyzer was commissioned at the Pyhäsalmi mine. After this, the analyzer was introduced at the Keretti and Vihanti mines.
